Have you ever thought about how nutrition can play a role in your future? This is the theme for National Nutrition Month this year. Let’s dive into how nutrition can be preventive healthcare.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: There are 3 types of Omega 3 Fatty Acids which are alpha-linolenic (ALA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA). You can find Omega 3 Fatty acids in fatty fishes, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flaxseeds to name a few sources. Omega 3 Fatty Acids have been researched to help lower the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease. DHA and EPA have also been helpful to reduce inflammation in the body. Omega 3 Fatty Acids have been researched also, in helping with brain health too. For those who do not eat fish on a regular a supplement is recommended. To prevent those fish burps after taking your supplement, place your Omega 3 supplement in the freezer!
Vitamins and Minerals: Each vitamin and mineral has their own function in the body. This is why it is important to have a diverse “diet.” (diet means more eating pattern not weight loss or specific eating pattern) For example, deficiency in Vitamin D can increase your risk for a weakened immune system or increased risk for insulin resistance. The way I encourage my clients to maximize their food is trying to 3 different colors on their plate at each meal. This will increase your probability of getting the most vitamins and minerals in daily.
Vegetables and Fruits: This is my number one tip to make consuming vegetables and fruits easier: Use what works for you! You do not want an expensive trash can! If you buy fresh vegetables and they rot before you eat them, do not buy them. Maybe frozen vegetables would work better for you. Honestly, their nutrient profiles are very similar. Remember, if you are throwing away the fresh vegetables you are not getting anything from them anyways! Just remembered fruits and vegetables have been shown to decrease the chance of cancer, heart disease, inflammation and more!
Today is the day you start to focus on how your food can help your health in the future! Where do you want to focus? Let me know in the comments below!
